Come play with photographers Tim Neumann and Lorie McQuirt, exploring the world of controlled lighting. In this hands-on workshop, participants will be sample a variety of lighting gear, then techniques and setups. Specifically designed with the novice in mind, the workshop focuses on taking students from zero knowledge, to working with multiple lighting scenarios.
The first portion of this workshop demonstrates several methods and approaches for separating the flash from the camera itself. Otherwise known as off camera flash (OCF), moving the light away from the camera, is the first step in creative light control. We will explore a wide variety of inexpensive and effective OCF solutions.
In the second section of the workshop, we will delve into the world of light modification. There are a huge number of light modifiers available, in the marketplace, today and we will provide hands on experience with quite a variety of these tools. Light modifiers, such as the ones we will see during the workshop, provide the ability to shape the light as you see fit, control the quality of the light hitting the subject and master the subtle nuances of light and shadow in your images.
In the last section of this workshop, participants will get to play with several staged scenarios, that will include models, props, and multiple light setups. Working as teams, the participants will explore placement of the subject, utilization of provided props, and last, but certainly not least, the control and modification of provided light sources. While working through these scenarios, participants will get the opportunity to tweak both the light source and its modifiers, until they have achieved lighting effects that are visually compelling. The bulk of the workshop schedule is dedicated to this time, to allow participants ample time and opportunity to try out a wide variety of scenarios, gear and techniques.
Each participant will be expected to provide a camera body that is able to fire a flash via a built in hot shoe. Participants should bring along any lens or lenses, that they would like to use. A general recommendation would be lenses that are in the 35mm to 85mm focal length (full frame focal lengths), or in the 50mm to 120mm focal length (crop sensor focal lengths).
We hope you will join us for what promises to be a fun filled and informative workshop, that uses a laid-back approach to exploring lighting. Come on and get your flash on!
